Finland this Thursday, Sweden Saturday and finally the Czech Republic on Sunday: here are the three prestigious opponents of the Swiss team this weekend in Helsinki for the Karjala Cup. Among the 27 players (2 goalkeepers, 10 defenders and 15 attackers) selected by Patrick Fischer there is only one Friborg: David Aebischer.
Last season, the Swiss team lost 11 of their 12 Euro Hockey Tour matches.
A first big tournament?
Aged 24, the defender, who has been playing in Lugano since this season, was trained on the banks of the Sarine. He was then loaned to Ajoie during the 2020-2021 season: with the Jura club, David Aebischer celebrated promotion to the National League, before playing three seasons at Rapperswil. Under contract with the bianconeri until 2029, he also hopes to find a place in the red jersey with a white cross. With what role?
David Aebischer dreams of participating in a major international tournament for the first time in his career. The next meeting is set for May 2025 in Stockholm in Sweden and Herning in Denmark for the Worlds.
The 2026 Worlds in Switzerland? This is my medium-term objective: it remains in the back of my mind
In particular competition with another Friborg defender, Andrea Glauser of the Lausanne Hockey Club, the one who has 16 selections for the Swiss team is already thinking about 2026. For what reason? Because the World Championships will take place in Switzerland. The best teams in the world will come to Friborg and Zurich in May 2026.
