What impact will the election of Donald Trump have on international Geneva? “A lot of people must be depressed or worried today in Geneva, that’s for sure,” said Jussi Hanhimäki, professor of history and international politics at the Graduate Institute. This specialist from the United States, however, remains cautious about the future. “Trump is unpredictable and it is entirely possible that there will be no big changes for Geneva. The key word today is uncertainty.”
A hotbed of multilateralism, Geneva, which hosts a number of UN agencies and its European headquarters, nevertheless has every reason to fear this winning return from the billionaire. During his first mandate (2017-2020), several organizations suffered his wrath. Starting with the World Meteorological Organization and its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), whose work guided the Paris Agreement to limit warming. The climate skeptic Trump withdrew immediately from power (the readmission of the United States will be President Joe Biden’s first decision in 2021).
