Traffic jams are eating into the purchasing power of the Swiss

Over the past twenty years, road freight transport prices have increased almost twice as fast as producer prices. This is shown in a joint document from the Swiss Union of Arts and Crafts, economiesuisse and ASTAG. Over the same period, traffic jam hours increased by more than half. For years, many transport companies have been forced to charge their customers increasingly high “congestion surcharges”. Therefore, part of the drop in productivity and additional costs is ultimately passed on to end consumers.

Food particularly affected

The food and everyday consumer goods sector is particularly affected. Nearly a third of heavy goods vehicles on the road are directly or indirectly linked to the food supply. However, it is becoming more and more difficult to provide these transport services. The difficulties are leading to an increase in producer prices, particularly for retail transport and public transport. Consumers can see it immediately in their wallets.

YES to investments in national roads

Traffic jams have increased by almost 15% per year on average in recent years. Over the last two years, we have observed a real explosion in traffic jams, with an increase of more than 22% compared to the previous year. In almost 87% of cases, they are due to traffic overload. We must invest in national roads to stabilize the transport system and thus reduce transport costs. The economy supports the yes to the development of national roads on November 24, 2024.
