Neuchâtel parents who wish to homeschool their children will have to obtain authorization from the canton in the future, whereas previously a simple announcement was sufficient. They will have to present a coherent educational project, which makes it possible to achieve the objectives of the Romand Study Plan (PER), without however having to present a teaching diploma, as is the case in Valais or Fribourg. Controls may be put in place, including evaluations at the end of each cycle. The Council of State is aiming for entry into force for the start of the school year in August 2025.

The necessary law changes were accepted by a large majority of the Grand Council on Tuesday. The opposition mainly came from the disappointed PS: “The tool lacks flexibility and limits the possibilities of adapting the educational framework. It is perceived by parents as a ban,” argued MP Yasmina Produits. The POP relayed the concerns of the Instruire en liberté (IEL) association, particularly regarding the conditions to be met to obtain authorization.
