(Keystone-ATS) The European elections in the Netherlands come down to a neck and neck between the red-green alliance and the radical right party of populist Geert Wilders, the first forecasts indicated Thursday evening.

According to these first indications given Thursday evening on television, the red-green alliance of the social-democratic Labor Party and the green party GroenLinks would obtain eight of the 31 mandates at stake, the Eurosceptic Party for Freedom (PVV) of Geert Wilders seven .

Previously it was expected, based on polls, that Mr Wilders’ party would win a European election for the first time. Five years ago, he entered the European Parliament with only one MP.

Although he has renounced his commitment to organize a binding referendum on a “Nexit” – an exit of the Netherlands from the EU – his manifesto remains fiercely Eurosceptic.

The right-wing extremist created a surprise in November by winning the national legislative elections with his anti-Islam party. He will now govern with three other right-wing parties.

Until Sunday evening

Around 360 million Europeans can vote until Sunday to elect the 720 deputies of the European Parliament. The Dutch were the first to vote. The other 26 EU member states will follow in the coming days. The results will only be published once the vote is finished, that is to say Sunday evening.
