The raw truths from Ismaila Madior Fall to Ousmane Sonko

During a meeting in Ziguinchor last Friday, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef list, announced his intention to repeal the amnesty law if he obtains a parliamentary majority. According to Sonko, this repeal would make it possible to hold accountable all those who benefited from this law, including former President Macky Sall. This statement sparked a strong reaction from Ismaila Madior Fall, former Minister of Justice.

Guest of the Grand Jury show on RFM on Sunday, Ismaila Madior Fall strongly criticized the idea of a repeal, which he considers to be a promotion of impunity. For him, the responsibility for the recent unrest does not rest solely on an individual or a group, but is part of a broader dynamic involving the whole of Senegalese society. He recalled that calls for demonstrations came from various actors, including the opposition, and that the State must ensure stability.

As an alternative to repealing the law, Ismaila Madior Fall proposed the establishment of a “justice and reconciliation commission”. Inspired by international models, this commission would aim to examine the “unfortunate events” which marked the country, while encouraging a peaceful and inclusive approach. Madior Fall believes that such an initiative could meet the needs for justice without exacerbating divisions within society.

He also warned against the effects of the repeal of the amnesty law, questioning the real interest of those who advocate this solution. For the former minister, a reconciliation process could allow Senegal to turn the page on tensions and move towards a more united and peaceful future.
