A fire ravaged a hotel in the center of Brussels on Saturday evening, along Boulevard Adolphe Max. The fire started in a bedroom on the third floor. Dozens of customers had to be evacuated, some using firefighter ladders. The hotel is currently unusable. The origin of the fire is believed to be criminal.
The fire which broke out on Saturday evening in a Brussels hotel could be of criminal origin, said Sunday the spokesperson for the Brussels Capital/Ixelles police zone, Linda Camarero-Verde. In total, around 80 people had to be evacuated.
Around 10:30 p.m., the police were contacted for a fire at the Manhattan Hotel, located at number 140 Adolphe Max Boulevard. “Several police and fire teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. When emergency services arrived, they noticed that the flames were visible on the third floor.“, clarified the spokesperson.
Emergency services and police established an advanced medical post at a nearby hotel. The police have also set up a judicial exclusion perimeter in order to facilitate the intervention of the firefighters. “In total, around 80 people were evacuated, many of whom were temporarily relocated to nearby hotels. Thanks to the rapid and efficient intervention of the firefighters, no person was injured“, added Linda Camarero-Verde.
The Brussels public prosecutor’s office was informed and an investigation was opened. An expert from the prosecution and the laboratory visited the site on Sunday. “Evidence indicates that the fire could be of criminal origin. The precise circumstances and causes of the fire remain to be determined and are currently the subject of a thorough investigation“, concluded the spokesperson for the police zone.
