“The Suspect” plunges a psychologist beyond suspicion into turmoil. After a macabre discovery, he becomes the ideal culprit for the local police. It’s up to him to prove his innocence, so innocent he is! A series in five episodes to watch on MyCanal since October 7.

Doctor Joe O’Loughlin (Aidan Turner), a good family man in all respects despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease, stands out with a heroic act by preventing the suicide of a patient in a clinic. At the same time, the body of an unknown woman is found half-buried in the local cemetery. Both titles make headlines. What they have in common: the number 21.

While Doctor Joe receives Bobby (Bobby Schofield), an unstable young patient who holds tightly in his hand a sheet blackened with lines of 21, we discover that the body of the deceased has been larded with 21 stab wounds. Chance or coincidence? One evening, Joe joins a group of prostitutes at a bar for a meeting. Among them, an ex-patient who has become a friend, as well as detective Wallis (Imogen Daines). She suggests that Joe come and inspect the stranger’s body at the morgue to try to profile the killer.

Overwhelming evidence or mere coincidence?

To his great dismay, Joe recognizes the victim, but does not divulge this major detail. Upset, he hides a host of other elements likely to incriminate him in this murder. Is this a body of overwhelming evidence or an accumulation of unfortunate coincidences? Could the brilliant heroic doctor be a dangerous, unhealthy and manipulative killer? Why doesn’t he tell everything he knows and wait until investigators uncover some disturbing facts before confessing his lies of omission?

The more the investigation progresses, the more a conviction emerges for the police: Joe is the murderer and could commit other crimes. It is urgent to stop it. With a scenario that winds through false leads and real discoveries, and even if the noose tightens on this suspect, it is impossible to decide with certainty, if only in relation to the advanced motive, much too light . For their part, investigators are convinced of his guilt.

Neglect of the past

As in any good self-respecting thriller, a solution seems to emerge from old ghosts that need to be talked about or forgotten files that need to be unearthed. Then the insignificant detail emerges: a neglect of the past with tragically disastrous consequences, which suddenly illuminate the need for revenge as much as for forgiveness.

Quite paradoxically, even if the culprit is unmasked well before the end of the series, the suspense persists and the interest redoubles as long as the real motive of this story, as sordid as it can be, is not revealed. The masterful interpretations of Aidan Turner and Bobby Schofield do the rest.
