This engine is the lightest V2 Ducati has designed. 9.4 kg less than the Superquadro 955 of the Panigale/Streetfighter V2, 5.9 kg less than the Testastretta Evoluzione which it is intended to replace, 5.8 kg lighter than the Scrambler Desmodue. And what’s more, this V2 has a new system called IVT (Intake Variable Timing) to modify the timing of the intake camshafts. Over a range of 52° of rotation, the ECU can set the best overlap based on engine rotation speed and throttle opening. More than 70% of the torque will be available from 3,000 rpm and from 3,500 to 11,000 there is 80% available at all times.
On the other hand, the Italian manufacturer had to give in on its eternal desmodromic distribution which closed the valves instead of springs. As on the V4 Granturismo, there is no longer this Ducati heritage, they rely on the operation that all other brands have long adopted. The distribution with the intake valves is ensured by chains, the feelers in contact with the cams and the valves have a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) surface treatment.
