Algeria is once again in the news, due to the “unusual” attitude of its representative, to say the least, this Thursday, October 31, during the Security Council session preceding the vote on resolution 2756 on the Sahara. . The Algiers regime tried, in vain, to have two amendments adopted: on the one hand, the expansion of MINURSO’s mandate to human rights issues in the region, and, on the other hand, the deletion of the call addressed to him, to resume talks in the form of round tables, with all the parties involved in the conflict. For Ambassador Omar Hilale, it is nothing more and nothing less than a “poorly scripted show».
«Unfortunately, my Algerian brother tried to resort to emotion. His message was not audible because coming from a country which violates human rights, which closes newspapers, televisions, which persecutes the opposition, artists, the Kabyle people», Reacted the permanent representative of Morocco to the United Nations, during a press briefing organized yesterday at UN headquarters. The rejection of these two amendments is synonymous with “failure» of Algerian diplomacy and its policy aimed at dividing the Security Council.
Omar Hilale described it as “irresponsible» and “unusual» the attitude of Algeria which tried to put pressure on the Security Council, by disrespecting the Pen holder and by coming to table two amendments at the last minute alongside the discussions on the resolution. “This proves that it is exclusively Morocco that interests Algeria. Algeria has not done the same on any other issue since joining the security council as a non-permanent member ten months ago», Underlined the Moroccan diplomat.
And to add: “No amendment was put in blue when confronting the Pen holder. We have not heard such a compassionate message on any of the questions that were asked in the Security Council. This simply proves Algeria’s involvement in this matter. Moreover, the Security Council resolution was clear on this issue, citing Algeria five times as a party to the conflict.».

In addition to a poorly scripted show, Algeria also signed a “dismal exit from stage» by deciding not to participate in the vote on resolution 2756. «Some diplomats smiled. Secretariat officials asked themselves: what is Algeria doing? Algeria missed the boat of opposing the resolution to demonstrate that it is indeed very attached to human rights issues», Estimates Omar Hilale.
Omar Hilale recalls that at the United Nations, when a Security Council member country does not participate in the vote, this means that it has a direct interest in the issue under discussion. “This is the proof that Algeria is giving to the whole world today, both in the form and substance of its behavior and in the presentation of its attitude,” he concludes.
