The Arab League Council at the permanent delegate level held, Thursday in Cairo, an extraordinary meeting to examine the decision of the Israeli Knesset banning the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) in the Palestinian territories.
The Kingdom of Morocco was represented at this meeting, held at the initiative of Jordan and supported by several Arab countries, by the Moroccan ambassador to Egypt and its Permanent Representative within the Arab League, Mohamed Ait Ouali.
Speaking on this occasion, the head of the UNRWA representative office in Egypt, Sahar Al-Jobury, indicated that at a time when the region is prey to growing conflicts and unrest, putting an end to the activities of UNRWA could lead to the collapse of one of the bases of stability in the region.
She stressed, in this regard, that UNRWA paid a heavy price from the outbreak of the war in Gaza, by fulfilling for more than a year its missions delegated by the UN General Assembly, adding that 237 Agency employees died and more than 200 buildings were damaged, in violation of international humanitarian law.
For his part, Mr. Ait Ouali, reiterated in a speech the constant position of the Kingdom with regard to the Palestinian cause, which His Majesty King Mohammed VI, president of the Al-Quds Committee, considers to be a fundamental and capital cause in Morocco’s foreign policy, noting that the Sovereign has continually reiterated the Moroccan position supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to the establishment of an independent state within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds-East as the capital, thereby guaranteeing peace and stability in the region.
In this regard, he highlighted the initiatives of HM the King, relating to the sending of tens of tons of medical and food aid, stressing that these large-scale humanitarian operations for the benefit of the Palestinians confirm the concrete commitment and the constant concern with which the Sovereign, president of the Al-Quds Committee, surrounds the Palestinian cause.
From this point of view, Morocco opposes all unilateral actions likely to fuel extremism and violence in the region, noted the diplomat, adding that the Kingdom always positions itself as a constructive actor in all efforts to establish a comprehensive and just peace guaranteeing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, in accordance with regionally and internationally agreed benchmarks.
