The number of people with diabetes increases every year in Gabon and around the world. The reasons are varied, but this increase is mainly due to lifestyle, in addition to hereditary factors. To counter this trend, health professionals and decision-makers have chosen November 14 as a day to raise awareness and fight against this disease. The objective is to intensify prevention and support efforts for people with diabetes.
In Libreville, World Diabetes Day, celebrated yesterday under the theme “Diabetes and well-being”, did not go unnoticed, outside of official commemorations. It gave rise to several activities, including free screenings and a symposium organized despite the rain on the esplanade of the Géant Casino hypermarket (Mbolo) by the Facultés pharmacy. This initiative, the fifth of its kind, is part of the health commitments of this pharmacy located on Boulevard Paul-Marie-Yembit.
“We have set up free screenings for the population in order to collect data that will make it possible to define clear strategies and optimize the fight against diabetes in Gabon.“, declared Ghislaine Akerey, pharmacist at this pharmacy near Omar-Bongo University (UOB).
