At least 70 sheep dead in three days in Berrechid: explanations from ONSSA

Local authorities, the royal gendarmerie and the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA) mobilized their agents on site following the death of more than seventy sheep and other sheep, intended to be sacrificed during Eid Al-Adha. The Regional Veterinary Service mentions the sudden change in diet.

At least seventy sheep and some fattening calves from Berrechid died in the commune of Mabarkine, located in the province of Berrechid, in the space of three days. According to observers, these animals, whose total value is estimated at 140,000 dirhams, had already been sold to citizens for amounts ranging between 5,000 and 7,000 dirhams per head.

Indeed, the ONSSA confirmed that laboratory tests demonstrated that the Berrechid fattening sheep succumbed to poisoning caused by a significant proliferation of the bacteria Clostridium perfringens. A change in diet could be the root cause.

Furthermore, the breeder, having discovered the first losses, immediately informed the local authorities. An investigation was launched to determine the causes of these massive losses.

Initial investigations reveal that these cases are isolated and that the animals have not contracted any contagious disease.

Likewise, laboratory analyzes suggest food poisoning due to an abnormally high proliferation of Clostridium bacteria, usually present in minimal quantities in the intestine, which led to the sudden and progressive death of these animals over a few days, specify Office sources.
