On May 9, Slovenia initiated procedures to recognize Palestinian sovereignty, “a first irreversible step,” assures the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the social democrat Tanja Fajon. And this, even if Ljubljana has not indicated the date on which it would formalize its decision. A non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since January 1, 2024, the small country resulting from the breakup of the former Yugoslavia is very committed to supporting Palestine.

Satisfied with this announcement of recognition, Slovenian students lifted the blockade of the University of Ljubljana that they had been leading for several days. According to a recent poll, 57% of Slovenes support this decision by their government, and the Palestinian cause has broad consensus among public opinion, from the media philosopher Slavoj Zizek to the cook Ana Ros, elected “best chef in the world” in 2017… “Yugoslavia maintained close ties with the Arab world, including Palestine,” explains Nada Pretnar, of the very active Palestinian Rights Movement. Many Palestinians came to us for their studies. Slovenian solidarity for Palestine perhaps dates back to this time.”
