Not much time ? blue News summarizes the essentials for you

  • The TV-Box 5 is both the smallest TV-Box from Swisscom and the most durable.
  • It uses 35% less energy than the previous model and is made from 65% recycled plastic.
  • In order to save resources, it is important to use old devices for as long as possible and switch to devices that can be recycled when a purchase is necessary.

Whether you like to watch “Good night, little ones” before bed, the TV news or your favorite series after a long day, television and streaming services are very popular.

As both consume electricity, environmentally friendly solutions are needed. In addition to the useful life and the mode of transmission (streaming or linear television), it is above all the choice of terminal that plays a decisive role.

A TV-Box owes a large part of its environmental impact to its production, which is why the devices should be used for as long as possible. For a new purchase, it is preferable to turn to products that allow users to contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

Recyclable and resource-efficient

With the new TV-Box, you take your entertainment experience to the next level and make a small but significant contribution to climate protection. The electricity consumption of the new TV-Box 5 is 35% lower than that of the previous model.

The TV-Box 5 is a small multimedia device that works with Android: it allows access to different applications or streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube and can even be used as a gaming platform. These new services also work when connecting the TV-Box 5 to older televisions, allowing them to be used for longer.

The Swisscom TV-Box 5 is made largely from recycled plastic and the packaging is made from plastic-free recycled cardboard. The TV-Box is barely half the size of the previous model and therefore requires fewer materials. It has a power supply with USB-C connection which can be used for other devices, provided that it is no longer used for the TV-Box.

The secret to low electricity consumption

Fabio Farine, Product Manager at Swisscom, explains how it is possible that the new TV-Box consumes so little energy: “Low electricity consumption is possible thanks to the combination of three modes: operation, standby and Deep Standby . The “Deep Standby” energy saving mode serves to reduce electricity consumption to an absolute minimum. Added to this is the fact that we use the latest chip technology.”

If the TV-Box is not used, Deep Standby mode reduces electricity consumption from 14 kilowatt hours (kWh) to 6 kWh per year. “The only downside is that the TV-Box needs a little more time to turn on. In standard standby mode, it takes two to three seconds, while in Deep Standby mode, around 30 seconds,” adds Fabio Farine.

Deep Standby mode reduces electricity consumption and can be activated as soon as the TV-Box 5 is installed.

The best in entertainment with over 300 channels

With the TV-Box 5 from Swisscom, users have the choice between more than 300 channels. If something unexpected happens during a TV evening or if you accidentally fall asleep on the sofa, the recording function allows you to watch your favorite show later in complete peace of mind.

The TV-Box is very small, but it offers maximum quality. Thanks to an additional function, you can watch TV without commercial interruptions.

An important contribution to the circular economy

By using the TV-Box 5, you actively contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions. Whether during its manufacture or its use, the box generates only a fraction of the CO₂ emissions of traditional models.

Fabio Farine points out that older Swisscom TV Boxes are also energy efficient. “Prolonged use is always beneficial for electronic terminals. It is best to use old TV-Boxes for as long as possible.”

To save resources, it is not only important to use the devices you already own for as long as possible, but also to put them back into the circuit by recycling them at the end of their useful life.

Screen size, a factor in durability

Screen size is by far the most important factor: the larger the screen, the greater the power consumption when watching TV. “New technologies also make it possible to reduce the electricity consumption of screens, but their size has increased considerably in recent years,” explains Fabio Farine.

This is why the choice of the TV-Box is not the only one to be decisive, the screen must also be energy efficient.
