“The First OMEGA in Space” makes its elegant return

One of the most iconic and popular watches inOMEGA is making a comeback in production. Named “ The First OMEGA in Space », this model design vintage celebrates the brand’s heritage while incorporating historical elements and the advanced performance of a Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement.

This famous watch, initially identified by its reference number, CK 2998was first launched in 1959. It is distinguished by its slender Alpha hands, symmetrical case and dark bezel, all of which differ from the very first model Speedmasterreleased in 1957

These details attracted the attention of theNASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirrawho purchased the model as his personal watch and wore it during the mission Sigma 7 of the Mercury program, launched on October 3, 1962. This moment allowed CK 2998 to earn its nickname “The First OMEGA in Space”, marking the beginning of the legacy ofspace exploration for which OMEGA is still famous today.

Since then, the CK 2998 has attracted many enthusiasts and admirers Speedmaster watches around the world. The updated models this year retain this same style of second generationeach displaying a symmetrical 39.70mm case in polished and brushed stainless steel.

The black aluminum bezel incorporates theiconic tachymeter scale of the Speedmaster model, including the famous “Point above ninety”, a characteristic detail of the first versions of the watch. Under the new sapphire crystal, shaped in the hessalite style, OMEGA has installed a CVD-coated dial in a elegant gray-blue shadeevoking the CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. This dial is decorated with hour markers and Alpha hands for the hours and minutes, both coated with Super-LumiNova vintage. The central seconds hand, type “ Baton“, is lacquered white to match the markings.

Respecting OMEGA’s heritage, the watch features two vintage logosone on the dial and the other on the crown. The case back pays homage to the brand’s history with a medallion representing a seahorse, accompanied by the inscriptions “SPEEDMASTER”, “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”.

Obviously, just like rocket technology, innovations have made a considerable leap since the 1960s. To energize this collection, each watch is animated by the calibre Co-Axial Master Chronometer 3861.
