Egypt and Jordan on Thursday condemned an Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced people in the town of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip that killed at least 28 Palestinians and injured more of 54 others.

CAIRO/AMMAN, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) — Egypt and Jordan on Thursday condemned an Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced people in the town of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, which killed at least 28 Palestinians and injured more than 54 others.

In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said “heinous crimes committed by the Israeli army for over a year without accountability from the international community have led to new violations.”

He also blamed the Israeli army for firing on a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) position in Naqoura and another UN site in Labbouneh in southern Lebanon.

Egypt demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, the statement said, urging the Israeli military to ensure the safety of UN employees and their property.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry also condemned in a statement the Israeli attack on the Gaza school, saying it constituted “a blatant violation” of international law and “a deliberate targeting” of civilians and shelters for displaced people.

“This is happening in the absence of a firm international position to curb Israel’s aggression and force it to respect international law,” lamented Sufian Qudah, spokesperson for the ministry, stressing the need for the community international community to assume its responsibilities by immediately stopping the Israeli offensive on Gaza, providing necessary protection to the Palestinians, ending Israeli violations of international law and holding all those responsible to account for their actions.

The conflict in the Gaza Strip, sparked by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has entered its second year. Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues its efforts on the Lebanese front against Hezbollah, after the group fired a barrage of rockets into Israel in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza conflict.
