Banjul – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, welcomed the African Atlantic Initiative launched by HM King Mohammed VI for the benefit of the Sahel States.

In a statement to the press following his meeting, Saturday in Banjul, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy indicated that Burkina Faso, “a landlocked country”, welcomed this Royal Initiative allowing the countries of the Sahel to have access to the Atlantic Ocean.

He affirmed that his country is “interested in more than one way” in this Royal Initiative, stressing that its “technical contours are being revealed more” and which relate not only to physical access, but also to other types of facilities that landlocked countries need “for their economies to be efficient”.

This Initiative is in perfect coordination with the integration policies which are implemented at the level of West Africa, but also within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), bringing together Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, added the Burkinabè minister.

While welcoming this Initiative, the minister assured that his country’s experts “will be ready”, indicating that a consolidation meeting will be held soon to “try to outline the contours” of the Initiative.

The meeting between the Moroccan minister and his Burkinabè counterpart focused on strengthening bilateral relations, as well as subjects of common interest and the situation in the sub-region, among others.

The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the work of the 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference, took place in the presence of the ambassador, director general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, Mohamed Methqal.

Mr. Bourita had, during his stay in the Gambian capital, a series of interviews with several of his counterparts and officials participating in the Islamic Summit which opened on Saturday in the Gambian capital.
