The Consulate General of India has identified the grandparents who died with their grandson in a collision following a wrong-way police chase on Highway 401 earlier this week.

We offer our sincere condolences for the tragic loss of Indian nationals – Mr. Manivannan, Ms. Mahalakshmi and their grandchild – in the collision on Highway 401, the consulate general said in a message on X, formerly Twitter, Friday evening.

The consulate general says officials have met the bereaved family at the hospital and assures them they will provide all possible help.

The accident, which left four dead and two seriously injured, occurred during the night from Monday to Tuesday in Whitby, about fifty kilometers east of Toronto.

The infant’s parents, a 33-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, were also in the vehicle. They were taken to hospital and the mother seriously injured.

The collision occurred after a police chase that began with an alleged robbery at a liquor store in Bowmanville, in the Regional Municipality of Clarington. Police pursued the suspect who was driving the wrong way on Highway 401.

That chase ended in a fatal collision involving at least six vehicles, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations . The robbery suspect was also killed.
