Rabat – The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) called, Monday on the occasion of World Translation Day, for concerted and united action to preserve and promote this “art noble human”, which has always been a means of bringing people together.
In a press release, ICESCO paid tribute to the crucial role of translators who facilitate civilizational dialogue, understanding and cooperation between nations, and promote the exchange of knowledge between the peoples of the world, in the service of development and common prosperity, as well as peace and security.
“On September 30 of each year, the world celebrates World Translation Day, proclaimed by the United Nations through Resolution No. 71/288 adopted on May 24, 2017, in response to the request of the International Federation of Translators which has commemorated the event since 1991,” recalled the organization.
On this World Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Translation, an art to be protected”, ICESCO also praised the role of translators in the exchange of knowledge between peoples and the promotion of world peace, while allowing the intellectual and creative works of authors around the world to be transmitted from one language to another.
Furthermore, the press release indicates that in light of the rapid developments in translation, in particular thanks to artificial intelligence technologies, which continue to revolutionize applied languages by offering remarkable solutions in this area every day, and in harmony with its new vision and strategic orientations, the ICESCO Translation Center has been transformed into a “Translation and Publication Center”, now a programmatic entity in the same way as other departments and sectors.
Thus, the new Center will be responsible for translating works and documents, publishing work related to education, culture, science and communication, organizing scientific meetings on translation, enriching the content scientific and cultural through the publication of specialized works, and to strengthen cooperation with international publishing houses, by coordinating efforts in this area, specifies the same source.
“Although ICESCO adopted, since its creation in 1982, Arabic, English and French as official working languages, it has never neglected to open up to other languages, and translation remained its main means of transmitting its civilizational message on a global scale,” we continued, recalling that for four decades, the Translation Center has provided its services for different sectors and departments within the Organization, translating and publishing thousands of documents, studies, research and works in all its fields of action.
