Not a living soul. The contrast between the violent clashes of the day before, pitting pro-Palestinian students against counter-protesters, is striking. A few students are reading in the grass, most are walking, their eyes darting between their smartphones and the building in which they are supposed to have classes. Following last night’s violence, the University of California at Los Angeles finally decided to cancel all classes for the day. Information that many students discover when they arrive on site. A terse email warned students that “due to the distress caused by the violence that took place at Royce [Hall] late last night and early this morning, all classes are canceled today.”

In the center of the campus, the imposing encampment in support of Gaza is still set up, surrounded by barriers and a large security system supposed to maintain calm. A few pro-Palestinian students, surgical masks or keffiyehs on their faces, wander between the tents under the indifferent gaze of the police and security agents. A few curious students stop to see what’s going on.
