At a time when the Federal Council and its ministers Albert Rösti (UDC) and Karin Keller-Sutter (FDP) are keen to cut indirect aid to the press, the National Council took a step in the other direction on Thursday. It adopted a parliamentary initiative by 126 votes to 61 to increase financial support for newspapers and magazines. Apart from the UDC, all parties voted yes by a majority.

In the process, the National Council approved two motions, one to create an envelope for electronic media, and the other to extend aid to morning delivery for certain publications choosing providers other than La Poste. The Council of States must still confirm these votes.
