Famed Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently shared his thoughts on the retirement announcement of legendary Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain.
A difficult decision for Nicko McBrain
Nicko McBrain, Iron Maiden's iconic drummer since 1982, has announced his retirement from touring in December 2024, marking a turning point for the legendary band. Asked by Metal Pilgrim On this decision, Mike Portnoy expressed his sadness: “Nicko has been a very good friend for over 30 years. As a friend, it's sad to see him forced to make such a difficult decision. I totally understand why the band is still going — they're a big international band playing stadiums all over the world. And Nicko only mentioned his retirement from touring, so I hope he stays in the band to create Music with them, even if it's in a more limited capacity. Whatever happens, I wish him the best.”
