After weeks of complex negotiations involving several clubs, Irvin Cardona finally seems to be getting closer to a long-awaited return to AS Saint-Étienne. The striker, who played for Saint-Etienne in the past, has never hidden his desire to return to Forez.
A tumultuous journey since his departure
After leaving ASSE, Cardona experienced a turbulent period. Transferred to Augsburg in Germany, he was then loaned to Espanyol Barcelona in La Liga last season. However, his time in Spain was not a success with only a goal and an assist in 15 matches. Faced with this delicate situation, the Saint-Etienne leaders reopened the file this winter at the request of the new coach Eirik Horneland.
Difficult negotiations but a near outcome
The negotiations to complete the transfer turned out to be particularly complexinvolving multiple actors. Espanyol Barcelona demanded in particular compensation for the paying loan taken out with Augsburg. Despite the difficulties, an agreement now seems close. A telltale sign is the absence of Cardona in the Espanyol squad for last night's match against Valladolid. The player should arrive in Saint-Etienne today to undergo his medical examination.
