Will Renault stay in Algeria? Nothing is less certain. Its Oran factory, inaugurated with great fanfare at the end of 2014 by Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault, alongside Laurent Fabius, at the time Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Emmanuel Macron, brand new Minister of the Economy, is today at a standstill. The French group, the first foreign car manufacturer to set up in Algeria, is no longer welcome. Renault had not imagined that the Algerian government would ban the importation of “assembly kits”, these large modules produced in other countries, which local workers only have to assemble.
However, this is the decision taken in 2020 by the State. « Without the parts needed to assemble vehicles, production cannot restartindicates a source close to the matter. Renault is ready to relaunch its activity. But the Algerian state refuses to clear customs of the parts necessary for production which remain blocked at the port. »…
