Stevie Nicks: ‘There’s No Chance Fleetwood Mac Will Reunite Again’

In a new interview with MojoStevie Nicks says Christine McVie’s death in 2022 marked the end of Fleetwood Mac.

The six decades of the Fleetwood Mac saga have come to an end. In a new interview with Mojo, Stevie Nicks dashed any hopes of a reunion due to the death of Christine McVie. “ Sans Christine [McVie]nothing is possibleshe said. There is no chance of reforming Fleetwood Mac in any way shape or form. Without it, it can’t work. »

The singer and keyboardist died in 2022 following a stroke. “ It was quite strange, because there had not been the slightest warning signNick said. We got a call, and I was going to rent a plane to go see her, but her family told us, “Don’t come, because she might not be here tomorrow.” And the next day she died. I wanted to go there and sit on his bed and sing songs to him – which would definitely have made him die faster. But I needed to be with her. And I couldn’t do it. It was very hard for me. I couldn’t say goodbye to him. »

When McVie retired from the group in 1998, the remaining members, Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Lindsey Buckingham, formed a quartet. McVie returned in 2014, but long-simmering tensions between Nicks and Buckingham boiled over four years later, and the group fired Buckingham. They toured in 2018-19 with Mike Campbell and Neil Finn replacing him. Their last show was a benefit concert for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals at Oracle Park in San Francisco on November 19, 2019.

Mick Fleetwood made peace with Buckingham in 2021, and expressed hope that he could return to the band one day, but Nicks told Mojo that this would not happen: “ Although I thought I would be able to work with Lindsey again, he had health issues. It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure Lindsey could do the kind of tour that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go for a year and a half. It’s so demanding. » (Buckingham underwent heart surgery in 2019 which temporarily sidelined him from touring, but he made a full recovery and returned to the road in 2021).

Stevie Nicks has spent the last three years performing solo in the United States. His set consists of Fleetwood Mac classics such as “ Gypsy », « Dreams » et « Rhiannon ». « When I go on stage, I couldn’t be more proud of my band. I mean I’d rather not be released from Fleetwood Mac, because of Christine. But I’m in a situation where I can focus on my solo work. I can do whatever I want now, without having to worry about stopping and going back to Fleetwood Mac… [Mais] Fleetwood Mac is all over my set. Now that there’s no more Fleetwood Mac, it opens the door for me to do other songs, like “ The Chain ”, which I have never done [en solo]. I will keep Fleetwood Mac’s music alive for as long as I can. »
