Cyndi Lauper would have wanted to be Madonna’s friend, not rival, in the ’80s

In a recent interview given to New York Times, Cyndi Lauper said she regrets being put in competition with Madonna by the media and the music industry in the 1980s. The singer Girls Just Want to Have Fun would rather have liked to be friends with the Madonna.

“I would have liked to have a friend,” Cyndi Lauper confided on June 4.

“It was like apples and oranges,” added the now 70-year-old artist, referring to their respective styles of music, which she considered different.

It is true that the pressure was strong, for music lovers as well as for those in the recording industry, to have to choose between Cyndi Lauper and Madonna at that time. Cherishing the two pop singers was, for some, high treason.

The young divas both released their debut in 1983. Madonna’s self-titled album included the megahit Holiday and that of Cyndi Lauper, She’s So Unusualsongs Girls Just Want to Have Fun And Time After Time.

In 1985, Lionel Richie preferred Cyndi Lauper to Madonna to voice the song which had become cult. We Are the World which brought together the greatest American performers of the time, including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.
