Did Taylor Swift lose ‘$150 million’ and ’17 million subscribers’ by supporting Kamala Harris?

The singer angered Donald Trump after officially endorsing Kamala Harris on September 11.

Pro-Trump accounts are relaying an article from a parody site to claim that the singer has already lost $150 million following this announcement.

Others claim that 17 million of her subscribers have stopped following her on Instagram, figures that are incorrect according to social media analysis tools.

US presidential election

Donald Trump “HATES” her, as he posted in capital letters on his Truth Social network on Tuesday, and his supporters are denigrating her with false information. The reason? An announcement by Taylor Swift, who announced on September 11 that she supported the Democratic camp and its candidate Kamala Harris, as was already the case in 2020. Enough to trigger the wrath of the former American president, who claims that the singer “will probably pay the price in the music sales market.”

That was all it took for the first figures to start circulating, particularly among pro-Trump accounts on X. “Taylor Swift lost about $150 million due to boycott of her merchandise” For example, this account claims to have garnered 2.5 million views on its publication. Loss figures vary between $150 million and $125 million, depending on the publication.

Yet, no article from American or international specialized media has echoed this information. And for good reason: the only content mentioning a loss of 125 million dollars for Taylor Swift since September 11 is a parody article from the Esspots site. The word “satire” is visible at the top of the article in which we read on the last line “this is not reality”.

However, it was this article that was relayed by many pro-Trump accounts, with photos of Taylor Swift crying. Photos taken out of context, since they were taken in 2012 while the singer was performing at a cancer event.

17 million fewer followers on Instagram for Taylor Swift?

Another publication claims that the singer lost 17 million followers on her Instagram account in the days following her statement in support of Kamala Harris, going from 301 to 284 million followers.

A sign that her stance has been punished? Not really. According to figures available in open sources via the Social Blade site, it is rather the opposite. On September 11, Taylor Swift had 284,003,823 subscribers, compared to 284,117,473 on September 17, a gain of 113,650 subscribers at the time of writing. Note however that on the single day of September 17, just after Donald Trump posted his message on Truth Social, Taylor Swift had lost approximately 6,000 subscribers.

The interpreter of Shake It Off claimed that her stance was partly due to the misinformation she had been subjected to. The former president had not hesitated to share images generated by artificial intelligence of “Swifties”, Taylor Swift’s fans, wearing pro-Trump caps and T-shirts. However, the effects of her appeal remain difficult to assess: according to a recent YouGov poll relayed by The Independent66% of respondents assure that the superstar’s announcement will not make any difference in their choice of vote, and 18% believe that it will even harm Kamala Harris.
