This remarkable castle in Gers wants to come out of its “slumber”

It is one of the largest and most interesting castles of Lomagne, but this castle located in the north of Gers remains closed to the public. A collection aims to get it out of its “falling asleep”. The site was selected by the Heritage Mission among the 13 in the Occitanie region.

Magnas Castle is located in the commune of the same name, not far from Lectoure and Fleurance, on lands belonging since the Middle Ages to the same family : from Galard.

A remarkable staircase

Built from the 15th century^e century, it passed through several hands before falling back into that of this family at the end of the 18th century.^e century and has known several work campaigns changing its profile over time, particularly in the 19th century^e.

Nestled in a 20 hectare parkat the top of a large alley that went up Henry IVit lost its large French gardens, but kept its centerpiece, a staircase in Angoulême stone, the work of Clément Parent.

Health emergencies as a priority and an opening in sight

The goal of the Heritage Mission is to bring this heritage, which cannot be visited, out of its “slumber while anchoring it in contemporary reality”. A safeguarding plan is structured in several phases, starting with health emergencies with the drainage and sanitation of the buildings and walls of the surrounding terraces, before the refurbishment of certain other buildings such as the outbuildings, the stables and the orangery as well as all the conservation work on the framework and roofs.

A project to open the site is under consideration with the support of local stakeholders (community of the commune, department, Region, Drac, Chamber of Commerce, CAUE, etc.). Faced with the scale of the task, but convinced of the merits and meaning of the approach, the owners are therefore seeking the support of donors through this subscription.

Reach 80,000 euros

The cost of the work is estimated at 245,671 euros. But the collection aims at 80,000 euros. A little over 2,000 euros have already been collected since the opening of donations, to which must be added 20,000 euros of sponsorships and other aid.
