If you told yourself that the end of Back in Action on Netflix, starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, paved the way for a second film, you weren’t wrong. The director confirmed he has ideas for a potential sequel and here are what they are.
After ten years of absence, Cameron Diaz makes an explosive and successful return to action comedy Back in Action ! As soon as it arrived on Netflix, and this is no surprise, this new release rose to first place on the podium of the most viewed films in France on the streaming platform. It even knocked out the French feature film to second place To Life with Guillaume Canet, who was number 1 since its launch. Back in Action thus offers entertainment that is worth the detour with a fantastic duo formed by Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. The actors play Emily and Matt, respectively, two married former CIA spies who are forced to re-enter the world of espionage when their cover is compromised. At the end of the film, the couple manages to defeat Chuck (Kyle Chandler), a friend turned enemy. And as they return to their normal lives with their children, they receive a surprise visit from a former colleague, Baron (Andrew Scott), who already has another job for the duo – and this time, it’s linked to the Emily’s family tree.

The last minutes of Back in Action indeed pave the way for a second film. Baron reveals to Emily and Matt that Chuck’s body has still not been found and that he needs help from Emily and a family member. When the latter confides to him that her mother, played by Glenn Close, would be delighted to join him, Baron surprises them by saying that it is his father’s help that they need. Like Matt, we’re stunned because Emily’s father was never mentioned in the film. In order to have clarification on this cliffhanger and on a potential sequel to Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, the American site Entertainment Weekly spoke with director Seth Gordon on this subject. “We have an idea of who the father could be and what the whole story could bethe director began to reveal, before blaming the secrecy on the Netflix studio. They’re not even ready to acknowledge the idea of a sequel yet! So if you say a few words in favor of the film, there might be a chance“. While it is logical that Netflix wants to wait to see the audience figures for this film before ordering a sequel or not, the director is already ready to commit to this new story.

Seth Gordon also suggested that this potential sequel to Back in Action would feature Emily and Matt’s children, Alice (McKenna Roberts), the moody teenager, and Leo (Rylan Jackson), the tech savvy. “There are times when family comes into play and the events of a teenager’s life conflict with a person’s past as a spy. I feel like there are some opportunities or benchmarks that we can draw on from their lives“, revealed the filmmaker. The director notably cited as an example Leo, the son of Emily and Matt, who proves to be an ace spy throughout the film: “I can tell you that Leo, who is based on my son, has grown 10 to 15 centimeters since filming ended and his voice has softened. The plot would therefore not resume the next day [de la fin du premier film]. I think we would respect the timeline of their lives and show another event that happens a little later in high school for both of them [enfants]. But I tried to integrate into the first film that Leo shows his skills, promising moments for the sequel“. As for Ginny’s mysterious former husband, “I think we have to believe that she met him somewhere in the course of her work“, estimated Seth Gordon. “It wouldn’t be bad if he was British too. You’d have to believe this guy is holding a gun. So there are some people we could consider for this role. We definitely have creative ideas“, he concluded.
