2046 is like a fever dream, a fascinating dive into the tormented brain of Mr. Chow, a writer haunted by the ghosts of his past. Attempting to write a science fiction novel set in 2046, he explores a world where every element is imbued with melancholy and nostalgia. This date is not chosen at random: it evokes both a future year and the number of the hotel room where he experienced a secret and unforgettable love with Su Li Zhen, the enigmatic woman who continues to haunt his mind since In the Mood for Love.
But 2046 (2004) is not just a year or a number: it is also a powerful symbol. It represents the end of an era for Hong Kong, a silent and significant omen. In this labyrinthine film, the past, present and future intertwine in an inextricable way, blurring temporal and emotional markers. Wong Kar-wai orchestrates this confusion with visual and narrative mastery, plunging the viewer into a waking dream where it is as easy to get lost as to find oneself.
This Wong Kar-wai film dates from 2004 and celebrated its 20th anniversary last year with a new 4K restoration and a theatrical release. Notice to the director’s many fans: a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition is indeed in preparation at The Jokers. A limited collector’s edition of the film is expected in France on April 30.
