David Koepp returns to dinosaurs. The screenwriter, recurring collaborator of Steven Spielberg, had not taken up the saga since Jurassic Park II in 1997. Since this film dedicated to Ian Malcolm, the franchise has evolved a lot. Years later, a third part will see the light of day and will be largely disowned by the public. Then, we will have to wait until the 2010s for the universe to offer itself a new entrance. Jurassic World immortalized the new version of the park alongside new characters, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard first and foremost. But again, the public is not convinced by all the proposals.
A few months ago, Universal Pictures announced the start of work on a new feature film. Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla (2014) et Rogue Oneis responsible for the staging. He works from a screenplay by David Koepp, the details of which still remain secret. During an interview for The WrapKoepp talks about the rules he set for himself before starting writing. Nine commandments for a film that we hope will be a true return to the holy lands for all the worshipers of the universe.
“We don’t often have the opportunity to have instructions”
If he admits to having only had one word of command from Universal, David Koepp took advantage of this freedom to give himself some imperatives. Among them, respect for chronology holds an important place. Certain narrative elements of the last three films are debated, but Koepp decided to come to terms with them. From cloning to the appearance of dinosaurs alongside humans, Rebirth will not be a rebirth on all points.
He explains: “The events of the previous six films cannot be denied or contradicted, because I hate retcons (when a story denies elements of previous entries in a saga editor’s note)”. This approach could be complicated to manage, since the film must also respect another fundamental principle. “All science must be real”. There is no question of multiplying vague notions on cloning, the plot must be based on theories or ideas that could not be more solid. He adds that he is keen to involve “humor as oxygen” between two scenes of terror, before interrupting his enumeration of these commandments to avoid spoilers.
As a reminder, Jurassic World Rebirth is expected in cinemas on July 2, 2025. In front of Gareth Edwards’ camera, spectators will be able to see Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali. The three actors were given completely new characters, namely Zora Bennet, Henry Loomis and Duncan Kincaid. Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Ruflo will also be on the trip.
