The French military base in Abidjan will be handed over to Ivory Coast in January, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara announced on Tuesday, December 31.

“We can be proud of our army whose modernization is now effective. It is within this framework that we decided on the concerted and organized withdrawal of French forces in Côte d’Ivoire,” declared the Ivorian president in his end-of-year speech.

“Thus, the camp of the 43rd BIMA, the marine infantry battalion of Port-Bouet, will be handed over to the armed forces of Côte d’Ivoire from this month of January 2025,” he continued.

“To mark this new stage in the life of the Army, I decided to name this Camp after General Ouattara Thomas d’Aquin, a soldier with an exceptional career and the very first Chief of Staff of the Ivorian Army. “, announced President Alassane Ouattara.

Some 1,000 soldiers were deployed to the 43rd BIMA.

Focusing on the economic aspect, Ouattara assured that Côte d’Ivoire continues to demonstrate its resilience thanks to a solid macroeconomic framework and sound management of its public finances.

“Economic activity has remained robust, with a GDP growth rate of 6.1% in 2024, compared to 4.2% at the ECOWAS level. It will be around 7% in 2025. The debt of our country remains moderate. The stock of debt stands at 56% of GDP compared to a community threshold of 70% in the WAEMU zone. We will continue to maintain the solidity of our macroeconomic framework and our public finances. to consolidate the confidence of private, bilateral and multilateral partners,” he assured.

Alassane Ouattara also spoke about the presidential election in October 2025. He assured that the election would be “peaceful”, “transparent and democratic”.
