Senegal: PM Sonko presents his DPG tomorrow

Tomorrow, Friday December 27, 2024, Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister of Senegal, will take the floor to present his General Policy Declaration (DPG), more than eight months after his appointment as head of government.

The long wait is coming to an end. Eight months after his appointment, Ousmane Sonko will finally reveal the direction that his government intends to take to meet the expectations of the Senegalese. Initially planned earlier, its General Policy Declaration (DPG) was postponed due to the prevailing political instability.

Indeed, when he took office, Mr. Sonko faced a delicate situation: his party did not have a majority in the National Assembly. This configuration even gave rise to explicit threats of a motion of censure from the then majority, compromising any stable governance project.

Faced with this impasse, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, chose to dissolve parliament on Thursday September 12, 2024, thus opening the way to new legislative elections.

This election, held on November 17, 2024, reshuffled the political cards, allowing Sonko’s party, PASTEF, to obtain a comfortable majority in the hemicycle with 130 seats out of 165.

In an interview granted to our colleagues from the Senegalese Press Agency (APS), the government spokesperson, Amadou Moustapha Sarré, assured that “the Senegalese will have before them a Prime Minister who will show them the new direction that the country will take” for the next five years.

Announcing the colors, he indicated that “the Senegalese will be entitled to a general policy declaration backed by a clear orientation, based in particular on [le développement] territorial centers. »

Regardless, expectations are enormous. This DPG should thus be an opportunity to reveal government priorities, but also to return at length to the “Senegal 2050” program, aimed at driving sustainable and inclusive economic development.
