Robert Eggers, master of historical horror, signs a new masterpiece which will be released in a few days.
“the behemoth of horror”
Robert Eggers is an American director, screenwriter and producer known for his visually striking works deeply rooted in history and mythology. His films are distinguished by a dense and oppressive atmosphere, often fueled by folkloric and historical elements, as well as a narrative style that pushes the boundaries of the genre. Eggers is a master of detail, particularly in historical reconstruction, which he uses to immerse spectators in worlds at once realistic and supernatural. His approach to storytelling, often minimalist, favors atmosphere and emotional intensity, which makes his films a unique sensory experience, as he proves to us again this year.
Another biting success
In The Witch (2015)Eggers immerses viewers in 17th-century Puritan America, exploring themes of faith, fear, and rebellion through the story of an isolated family confronted by supernatural forces. The film is a masterpiece of psychological tension, beautifully photographed, and the storyline allows for a subtle exploration of madness and superstition. In The Northman (2022)Eggers offers a brutal reinterpretation of the Viking legend, inspired by the story of Amleth, a vengeful prince.
This film, with its ritual violence and epic staging, demonstrates Eggers' obsession with historical authenticity while exploring universal themes of vengeance, fate, and sacrifice. Finally, in The Lighthouse (2019)Eggers goes even further in psychological isolation with a closed session between two lighthouse keepers. A dark and hallucinatory film, The Lighthouse is a visual and narrative tour de force, where madness and obsession become the driving forces of an intense psychological drama, carried by exceptional performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
This month of December, the film Nosferaturemake of the 1922 classic, will arrive in cinemas. The story follows Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent sent to Transylvania for a deal with the mysterious Count Orlok, a vampire who takes a keen interest in Hutter's wife, Ellen, and brings with him a supernatural threat and epidemic. Although the film is yet to be released, movie fans are already excited about its visuals and star-studded cast, including Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, Emma Corrin, Lily-Rose Depp et Nicholas Hoult. Critics, for their part, have already had the chance to view the project and have come away enthusiastic.
It is a real success, with an excellent 95 % sur Rotten Tomatoes. “Despite its familiar story elements, Eggers' retelling is suffocating like a coffin, right up to its chilling final shot. Lily-Rose Depp is fully committed, and Bill Skarsgård's monster feeds with terrible fury,” summarizes Empire Magazine, like many other media outlets. We expected no less from Robert Eggers, nicknamed “the behemoth of horror” by the aggregator. All his films are a success.
