The new version of Snow White by Disney finally offers itself a proper trailer, both hideous and intriguing.
Five years after having identically remade its famous The Lion King in live-action with Jon Favreau, Disney is preparing to release the prequel for the Christmas holidays Mufasa : The Roi Lion directed by Barry Jenkins to tell the origins of Mufasa (logical given the title) and also of Scar. Next spring, it will be the turn of Lilo & Stitch whose teaser has been revealed to return to the big screen with yet another live-action remake. And between the two films, in February 2025, there will be above all Snow White.
A revisit even crazier than the others since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is obviously the first animated film from Disney Studios. The pressure is therefore great on the shoulders of the company and director Marc Webb. And if Snow White was the victim of stupid controversy over the skin color of its main actress Rachel Zegler, it is above all the appearance of the final result which frightens moviegoers. The first trailer for Snow White had provided little visual reassurance, the new trailer finally reveals more.
Snow White and Glossy-CGI
Visually, everyone will have their own opinion but difficult to be truly convinced as these new images of Snow White drowning in CGI. Between the seven dwarves (or at least, the seven creatures) that the heroine meets in the magical forest, the larger-than-life animals, the castle of the queen played by Gal Gadot and her transformation into a witch, nothing seems real . A shame for a live action remake supposed to bring to life a whole imagination originally animated (or drawn).
However, we are not going to simply stupidly criticize this strange aesthetic or hallucinate in front of the introductory scene of which my grayish colors and the location recall almost identically Hunger Games : The Ballad of the Serpent and the Songbird (with Rachel Zegler already). The trailer indeed has the merit of revealing some of Disney’s intentions with this revisit and in particular what the screenplay co-written by Greta Gerwig (yes yes, the director of Barbie) et Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train).
In addition to her complex relationship with her queen’s mother-in-law, her meeting with the “dwarves”, her love story with the Prince and her great adventure, Snow White should lead a rebellion against the kingdom and for the people. The ingenue from the Grimm tale could therefore transform into the leader of the revolt, riding a horse and taking full possession of her destiny. A small feminist turn a priori therefore, which is not very surprising coming from Greta Gerwig.
Of course, this is slightly reminiscent of the 2012 revisit with Kristen Stewart, Snow White and the Huntsmanwhich was not a success. That said, with the presence of Rachel Zegler in Snow White and especially her sublime voice to carry the songs of this new remake, Snow White might just have a few tricks up its sleeve. The musical extract present in the trailer is also rather promising, especially since it seems new. To ensure this, you will have to wait until March 19, 2025 in France.
