In Luxembourg: Which films will be showing under the stars at the Knuedler?

Eight days of cinema under the stars. The City Open Air Cinema will once again be set up on the Knuedler, from July 25 to August 1, with a screening every evening, at sunset around 9:30 p.m. No reservations, first come, first served. And, as every year, it’s free.

Here is the detailed program, and the trailer, of a poster that shares the great Hollywood classics, the best of Japanese animation and blockbuster films.

Thursday July 25: “Challengers”

This 2024 American film features a former tennis prodigy, played by Zendaya. She decides to devote herself to her husband’s career. Until he faces his former best friend and his wife’s ex in a tournament. Which sends the protagonists back to their past…

Friday July 26: “Casablanca”

“Casablanca” needs no introduction, considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time. In this 1942 feature film, Bogart runs a bar in the Moroccan city, under the control of the forces collaborating with the Nazis who occupy France. He plays a bitter and cynical American who ends up helping resistance fighters, reuniting with his old love, played by Ingrid Bergman, along the way. An unmissable masterpiece.

Saturday July 27: “The Young Ladies of Rochefort»

We go from black and white to very colorful, pastel trend. The famous musical film by Jacques Demy, released in 1967, stars Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac, who play “two twin sisters born under the sign of Gemini” who teach dance and music and dream of meeting love downstairs from their house. A classic.

Sunday July 28: “My Neighbor Totoro”

Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece tells the story of two little girls, Satsuki, 10, and her little sister Mei, 4, who move to the countryside with their father, their mother, who is sick and in hospital. While playing in nature, they find in a giant camphor tree an unknown and kind animal, Totoro, their new neighbor. The disappearance of Mei, the unforgettable cat-bus, the susuwatari, the music… This Studio Ghibli film, released in 1988, remains timeless. Note that it will be screened in Japanese, with French subtitles.

Monday July 29: “Barbie”

Last year’s big candy pink hit. Barbie (Margot Robbie) leaves her kitsch world accompanied by Ken (Ryan Gosling) and discovers real life, where men dominate and occupy important positions. Seeing this, Ken tries the revolution in Barbieland.

Mardi 30 juillet: «Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind»

Mixing romance and science fiction, Michel Gondry’s film (2004) stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood. Their world and their love story are turned upside down by a clinic specializing in erasing memories.

Wednesday, July 31: “Mission: Impossible”

We’re talking about the original “Mission: Impossible” version, released in 1996 with a young Tom Cruise. The franchise has since spawned countless sequels, but the cocktail was already there: action, stunts and a hint of humor.

Thursday August 1st: Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin Cine-Concert

We end with films paying tribute to the two giants of the silent era, set to live music. Three films of 25 to 45 minutes are on the bill. Two with Buster Keaton, “Sherlock Jr”, released in 1924, and “One Week”, from 1920, and one by Charlie Chaplin, “Behind the Screen”, from 1916.
