12 Years a slave

A critical and public success therefore. Club AlloCiné member L?c!s_H00d writes: “A wonder. A nugget. A masterpiece. That’s what “12 Years a Slave” is. A punchy film with a heavy atmosphere, magnificently directed by Steve McQueen. This poignant story which brought me to tears is very sober and of great quality writing and shows us trying and painful sequences. The director stages this human fresco by always placing his camera where it is needed, even if it means leaving room for certain lengths. The achievement is sublime. 12 years of absolute hell experienced by Solomon Northup, brilliantly played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. His performance is dazzling. All the actors are perfect in their characters. (…) Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Alfre Woodard are astonishing. (…) This touching, truthful and strong work is as much a descent into hell as a rise to power, like the rise of McQueen (II) among the very good directors to follow.

A visitor writes: “12 Years a Slave is, in my opinion, one of the best films released in 2013. The casting is impressive: Chiwetel Ejiofor is very good in the role of the slave Solomon Northup but my hat goes more to the supporting roles; in fact, Michael Fassbender is as usual impeccable and Lupita Nyong’o was the undeniable female revelation of the year 2013.”

Pour yohanaltec “Steve McQueen surely signs one of his most beautiful films with 12 years a slave. The images in the film are harsh and the lead actor’s performance is fabulous. A shock.”

Reymi586 writes: “What can I say… Steve McQueen, creates a masterpiece that will go down in cinema history. America is staring its old demons in the face and who better than Steve McQueen to take charge. After a number of supporting roles, Chiwetel Ejiofor finally plays his big role and he is surrounded by a very rich cast with Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lupita Nyong’o, Paul Dano, Brad Pitt, and so on. The actors are all really excellent. I really liked the direction and the long sequence shots dear to Steve McQueen, as well as the music by the great Hans Zimmer which provides a lot of emotion. A slew of Oscars awaits this film.”

Finally, for Selingues G “This film is truly a favorite and a magnificent punch. Based on a true story; the British director offers us a harsh and violent description of slavery. The casting is breathtaking, especially Chiwetel Ejiofor is fabulous (he could even surpass the role played by Michael Fassbender who is revulsed with terror in his role (also his best?). We are horrified by what was experienced by this man and the The injustice he suffered. The end of the film relieves the pressure and the emotion is at its peak. We cannot be touched by this magnificent story.

Since then, Lupita Nyong’o has appeared in Non-Stop, the new Star Wars trilogy, Jordan Peele’s Us and the Black Panther films.
