“The Count of Monte Cristo”, a new epic and fun adaptation

After the disillusionment that was the adaptation – one more – of Three Musketeersthe worst was feared from the new adaptation – yet another one, repeated twice – of Count of Monte-Cristo, also produced by Dimitri Rassam and Pathé, but there have been some changes. First of all, the duration: even if the two episodic novels by Alexandre Dumas have the same and imposing narrative density, the first was divided into two distinct parts, released last year eight months apart, while the second now takes the form of a single film which, despite its length (2h58), is more rhythmic.

The staging, then: director of the Three MusketeersMartin Bourboulon (Father or Mother 1 & 2, Eiffel) delivered a film that abused a dark chromatic register – as if to make it more serious – and often unreadable action scenes. The screenwriters of this laborious adaptation, Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte (who made a name for themselves by co-signing in 2012… First name) today realize a Count of Monte Cristo which is in some way the negative.
