The Creator : a science fiction film about the war between AI and humans

The release of The Creator couldn’t have come at a better time, at least as well as it fits with current events. As Artificial Intelligence interferes in businesses around the world, Gareth Edwards unveils a film in which humans and AI wage a merciless war in the near future. An American soldier infiltrated in Asia, Joshua (John David Washington) is tasked with finding a powerful artificial intelligence capable of allowing the East to win the war it is waging against the West. Sensing its near use, she wishes he would find it and destroy it. However, soon after his arrival in Asia, he discovered that the weapon in question is none other than a six-year-old girl named Alphie. But is this weapon human? Where is the truth ? What have we hidden from him? Joshua will have to make a choice: complete his mission or save what little humanity remains on this planet.

What are the director’s inspirations for The Creator ?

Gareth Edwards revealed when his opus was released that he had been working on this project for many years. For him, it is “a huge stroke of luck” that its diffusion coincides with the moment when the entire planet is questioning AI, its benefits and its dangers. As inspiration for writing his screenplay, he says he based himself mainly on In the heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad and Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola. Some references are also taken from Baraka, Blade Runner et Akira. When it comes to the central relationship between Joshua and Alphie, Rain Man, The Hit, E.T. l’extra-terrestre et Cotton candy gave him ideas.
