While Star Wars has not appeared in cinemas since 2019, the saga should make its comeback in 2026 followed by more regular releases. If Disney had already formalized three films, it seems that a new additional numbered trilogy is in the pipeline with a very particular character as the main figure.

Since the release of Episode IX in 2019, Star Wars has not made an appearance in cinemas with new feature films. If there has long been talk of a Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), the project has continued to be postponed until it now has an unknown status. Recently, we remember that Disney had made big announcements regarding the return of the franchise to theaters with three projects.

First of all, Mandalorian & Grogu which, as its name suggests, features the characters from the eponymous Disney+ series. Then, James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny…) will take care of a film retracing the story of the first Jedi. Finally, the last feature film will focus on Rey after the last trilogy, that is to say on what the young Jedi became after the events of Episode IX. If this film were to show her rebuilding the Jedi Order, it seems Disney has bigger plans for the heroine.

A new Star Wars trilogy announced, but…

Recently, it is the magazine Variety which taught us major information, confirmed by Deadline in the process. Disney is reportedly preparing a new Star Wars trilogy in the Skywalker saga which would constitute Episodes X, XI and XII of the saga with Rey as the central character. If the project is only in pre-production state at the moment, The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes that the Jedi played by Daisy Ridley could also be in other productions in the future than the four films previously mentioned. Still according to the American media, for Disney, Rey would be “the most valuable, if not the only, cinematic tool Star Wars currently has”.

A rumor received lukewarmly by fans

If in this other context this news would have been welcomed with joy by Star Wars fans, two elements calm their enthusiasm. First of all, this new trilogy would be supervised by Simon Kinberg who would be found in production and screenplay. Problem is, the latter is not renowned either for his scripts (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Fantastic Four, Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter…), nor for his qualities as a producer (The New Mutants, the last Hercule Poirot…). On top of all that, this new trilogy will therefore focus on Rey, a character little appreciated by fans. This is explained by the fact that the heroine was at the center of the last trilogy which had a rather mixed record and which did not leave an impression like the previous ones. As a result, the announcement was received rather lukewarmly by the Star Wars community, but once again, before judging, it is better to wait to see the form that the project will take.
