Fifty Shades of Gray was a great commercial success despite a more than questionable critical reception. The film is currently available on TF1+.

The definitively original story of Fifty Shades of Gray

We all know Twilight to be a huge literary success, based on the love triangle between three characters which we will later see brought to the big screen. The saga written by Stephenie Meyer is today a true pillar of pop culture and is the origin of a huge community of devoted fans: it turns out that, quite naturally, fan fiction then emerged. One of them, hotter than the others, quickly gained fame under the name Master of the Universe, signed EL James and clearly playing the eroticism card.

These initially very amateurish stories then attracted attention, to the point of receiving warnings about their explicitly sexual content. James therefore had to publish her fan fiction on her own site, before finally renaming the characters (originally from Twilight, for which she did not have the rights) to Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele, to better self-publish her novel. Of there was then born Fifty Shades of Grey, which had an impressive commercial success with 40 million books sold in just eighteen months… although it did not have good reviews, mostly bad ones.

A similar fate in the cinema

Faced with such commercial success, Hollywood was not crazy and quickly chose to adapt Fifty Shades of Gray for the cinema, which has since become a trilogy of books, in three films, brought to the screen by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. Since then, the two have become huge stars and for good reason: the feature films crushed everything in their path, becoming a true cultural phenomenon when they were released in theaters. We are still talking about $571 million at the global box office for the first part released in 2015. Fifty Shades Darker, released in 2017, collected $381 million while Fifty Shades Freed earned $371 million. . That’s more than $1.3 billion in total.

However, like the books, the press is not kind to the trilogy. The first film receives a painful 25% average on Rotten Tomatoes; the second 11% only and the third 11% also. A torture for many, a guilty pleasure for others, Fifty Shades of Gray is in any case available on TF1+ and you can watch it for free by taking advantage of the free trial. It’s up to you…
