At the request of Kevin Feige, the boss of Marvel Studios, James Gunn introduced the central element of the biggest arc of the MCU into the first part of Guardians of the Galaxy. An introduction to which he would have devoted only 90 minutes of his time.

The climax of the MCU

The golden age of the Marvel Cinematic Universe likely ended with the theatrical release of Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of the Infinity Stones saga that saw all of the superheroes come together for a final epic battle against the terrible Thanos. A grand finale, which was set up years ago with the secondary development of this saga within the various MCU films. Introduced implicitly with the presentation of the Tesseract in the film Thor, the saga of the Infinity Stones really began to take shape with the first part of the adventures of the Guardians of the Galaxy with the Collector sequence. But this sequence, oh so important for the entire continuation of the MCU, would have in fact been scripted in record time by James Gunn.

90 minutes watch in hand

Before taking the helm of the DC cinematic universe, James Gunn was best known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy. And when working on the first film, the filmmaker did not know that Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, was in fact going to entrust him with a mission of the utmost importance: introducing the Infinity Stones. And the most fascinating thing is that the filmmaker devoted only 90 minutes of his time to developing a sequence that set the stage for one of the biggest cinematic events of the century, as he explained last year at the microphone of Phase Zero.

I wrote this scene in about an hour and a half. And that became what we know from the Infinity Stones in the cinema… The entire MCU is then based on that. They told me: “You know, we were thinking of integrating the Power Stone into your story.” So I said, “That’s cool. Okay, the Collector will get the Power Stone.” And I made up all this bullshit!

The central element of the MCU, which still constitutes the main thread of all Marvel films today, was therefore fully revealed to the public with a sequence written in 90 minutes watch in hand. An absolutely astonishing anecdote, all the more so when we know the extent that these films have taken on with the public: the Avengers Infinity War/Endgame diptych is still today among the biggest successes at the Box office, having respectively grossed 2.052 billion and 2.79 billion dollars.
