Tanned people go skiing, Visitors, Wing or Thigh, Santa Claus is trash (which one of our editorial colleagues finally saw for the first time in 2024 and hated!) Grandpa resists… Popular comedies are legion in the rich French cinematographic heritage. The most memorable certainly remains The Great Mopbroadcast this Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 9:10 p.m. on France 2. A timeless film that has spanned generations of spectators. “I think it has entered the collective memory. From generation to generation: people show it to their children, to their grandchildren. It has thus remained intact, and it is actually quite surprising to see how well it has survived the years so well. The quality of the film also means that it has become part of the heritage of French cinema, so it is a film that we never tire of watching several times.“, analyzes the co-writer of the film Danièle Thompson with our colleagues atAllocinated.
A classic of French cinema, a real box office triumph
Work which mocks the German Occupation during the Second World War, The Great Mop would certainly not have the same flavor without Bourvil and Louis de Funès, already the star duo of Horns and a huge box at the time. Thus the two actors find themselves once again under the camera of Gérard Oury. And success is more than there! It’s simple, the film attracts no less than 17 million French spectators in cinemas. The Great Mop dominated the French box office for around thirty years before being dethroned by Titanic en 1997. The feature film, however, remained the biggest hit in French cinema until the release of Welcome to the Ch’tis in 2008 and its 20.4 million admissions and Untouchables in 2011 and its 19.4 million entries.
A rainy shoot in Burgundy
At one point in the film, Stanislas and Augustin find themselves in Burgundy, in Meursault (Côte d’Or) to join an underground Resistance cell. A place particularly renowned for its wines and its many great wines. From then on, off camera, the film crew and the actors do not hesitate to tour the vineyard to taste the divine nectars offered by the local winegrowers. “And in the evening, after some drunken evenings, certain members of the team return to their hotel, escorted by the police…“, tell our colleagues from Point. Cheers!
