He wasn’t going to turn his back on Middle-earth so easily, Peter Jackson… Since the announcement of the contract, negotiated in February 2023 by Warner, with the aim of making “several” new films based on the writings of JRR Tolkien, we were already looking forward to finding elves, trolls and other magicians. But what we didn’t know is that the instigator of the two film trilogies The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) and The Hobbit (2012-2014) was also going to be on the trip. Last month, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery has indeed announced the start of a new film produced by the New Zealand filmmaker, this time centered on Gollum, the former Hobbit perverted by the One Ring. Andy Serkis, who played the creature in the first trilogy, will not only reprise his character, but will also direct the film.

And then last Tuesday, it was the turn of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival to put the director back in the spotlight by revealing his surprise involvement in the film The War of the Rohirrim. Announced in theaters on December 11, this cartoon will take us back to the kingdom of Rohan, discovered in the last two parts of the Lord of the Rings, this time almost two centuries before Frodo’s quest. However, since the launch of the project in 2020, Peter Jackson’s name has never been associated with it.
