The Hunt for Gollum takes place during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, taking Gollum’s point of view. Another film should follow, and Gandalf would still be in the program.
20 years after Peter Jackson’s three cult films, the Lord of the Rings license is available in numerous new multimedia projects. Prime Video has just released season 2 of Rings of Power and an animated feature film, The Rohirrim Warwill be released in cinemas on December 11. Video game adaptations are also legion, with recently a The Lord of the Rings Gollum that we are unlikely to forget, for the wrong reasons.
But soon, mainly new live action films are planned. The Hunt for Gollum is already confirmed and should be released sometime in 2026. But a second project, which we had not yet heard about, is in the pipeline.
The Hunt for Gollum takes place at the same time as The Fellowship of the Ring
It was the screenwriter Philippa Boyens who spilled the beans, in the columns ofEmpirea little forced to repair a dump from Ian McKellen. The interpreter of Gandalf declared in an interview a few weeks ago that The Hunt for Gollum would be a film divided into two parts. Philippa Boyens denies and claims a misunderstanding. The actor would in fact have gotten confused because Gandalf is planned for the film about Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis (who plays the character), but also for a second film which has nothing to do with it and which no communication had been made until now.
We will not know more about this second feature film. It does not yet appear to have received an official green light, but Ian McKellen seems quite convinced that this film is on the way and that he will be part of it. Philippa Boyens is silent on this subject, but is already talking about a second animated film in the event of the success of The War of the Rohirrim. “We have an absolutely brilliant second movie that would be just incredible […] But let’s see if it sparks interest”she declares.
Regarding The Hunt for Gollum, the screenwriter promises “a pretty intense story, set after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria”. It is therefore a “specific piece of an untold story”told through Gollum’s point of view, in the midst of the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
