The Smile 2 twist

The rules of the saga Smile are simple: an evil entity drives a person to madness by imposing terrifying visions on him, then manifests into a giant and very disgusting monster which takes possession of its victim. When it’s done, said victim commits suicide in front of a witnessand in a particularly awful way if possible, with a big smile on your face.

It is then the witness who will begin to have visions and lose control, to the point of killing himself in front of someone else, and so on. Spectators who had already seen the first film therefore knew that the entity of Smile 2 would play with the mind of the heroine, Skye, and that she would start to see things that are not always real. Or visible only to her. But maybe they didn’t know how much.

Lookalike Bacon, heroine of the first Smile

In the last part of Smile 2things take a particularly extreme turn as Skye thinks she sees her mother commit suicide in front of her eyesto then realize, in a homage to Black Swanthat it was she who would have horribly murdered her. Then, she runs away with her friend Gemma to find Morris, the man who offered to help her. But the entity takes over there too, and Skye realizes that Gemma was never really there by his side throughout the entire filmand that she never joined Morris in this abandoned fast-food restaurant.

Better yet: she never even killed her mothersince she is applauding in the audience at the moment when Skye comes to her senses on stage… Doubt is then allowed: Is almost everything that happens in the movie, from Skye’s first costume fitting, fake?

The hidden meaning of a suit

In fact, it’s when she puts on this glittery bodysuit that she has his first vision of Luis in the mirrorand that a change seems to take place in his personality. And while she asks not to use this costume on stage, it is nevertheless the one she wears during the final concert. Moreover, note that this costume is decorated with butterfly wings, and represents the possibility of Skye finally emerging from her chrysalis and to take flight after the dark period she has been going through since the car accident that killed her partner.

But the final flashback of the accident, revealing his guilt in the tragedy, makes the viewer understand thatshe still hates herself for what she did. His refusal to wear this costume is actually a refusal to overcome this psychological barrier and turn the page. Her scar, which she says she does not want to show and which makes her suffer, is only a pretext, and above all a metaphor for the self-punishment she inflicts on herself.

Butterfly costume and revealing grimace for Skye’s curse that begins here

The metallic red costume she wears in the middle of the film, whose fins evoke devil horns or the failed and painful metamorphosis of a strange butterfly, reflects the evil influence under which Skye finds herself. This is another clue that indicates that his violent tantrums and panic attacks around those close to him probably only exist in the manipulation of the entity.

However, if the mirror scene is the pivotal point, is everything that happens afterward just manipulation of the entity and purely imaginary, or are there still real moments? Hard to say with certainty. But the lesson of this twist is that guilt and self-hatred terribly distort our vision of thingsand cause us to push people away from us even when they support us. This is what Skye seems to realize when she sees her mother in the audience at the end.

Real or imaginary scene?

The start of a Smile 3?

But unfortunately it’s too late for her. After finally realizing where she is, Skye is confronted, right in the middle of the stage of a packed concert hall, with the disgusting creature who will get the better of her. While the monster dislocates the singer’s jaw to enter her, the young woman is paralyzed, then falls into the final phase. Under the horrified eyes of her fans, she will wear the famous smile characteristic of the victims of the entity, and commit suicide by driving his microphone into his head.

A little glimpse of the creature in the first film

Nothing but sadly normal for a film Smile, but here, the situation is changed : By killing herself in front of thousands of people, will Skye spreading the curse at high speed ? If, as established in the first film, the witness of such a suicide is in turn contaminated by the entity, does that mean that the demon will multiply and torment every person in the community until death? room, who will then contaminate one or more people?

This could be the starting point for a possible Smile 3which would then go even much further than the second. Always at Screen RantParker Finn stated that there is “lots of exciting directions Smile could go in”and that of a smiling apocalypse started at the Skye Riley concert could be one of them… Let’s hope that we will soon have news of such a project. In the meantime, don’t miss Smile 2 which has been in theaters since October 16.
