Robert Pattinson will star in Mickey 17 by Bong Joon-ho and rather seventeen times than one as the poster proves.
Christopher Nolan, David Cronenberg, the Safdie brothers, Werner Herzog, James Gray, Robert Eggers… Robert Pattinson has been collecting renowned filmmakers since Twilight in addition to juggling very different roles. The actor is always there where you don’t expect him, as when he took a shuttle towards space under the command of Claire Denis in the strange High Lifereleased in 2018.
While this film was Robert Pattinson’s only foray into science fiction with Tenetthe actor will soon make his return to this field with Mickey 17 by Bong Joon-Ho. And while we wondered if Mickey 17 was a science fiction comedy or dystopian thrillerthe official poster for the film has been released and adds a little more mystery to the nature of this wacky project.
Mickey 17: Comedy or thriller
As a reminder, the film follows Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), an individual who embarks on a space journey to colonize a polar planet by accepting the only job that no one wanted, that of “replaceable”. The Replaceable is the name given to the worker who dies during dangerous missions to allow the expedition to move forward carefully. Then his body and brain are reconstituted and he is returned to death. But it is forbidden to develop a multiple, that is to say two versions of the same person, under penalty of death and of course that is what will happen to Mickey.
The American trailer sold us a satirical and crazy comedy with an unlucky Mickey Barnes who constantly dies while the Korean trailer showed the more serious aspect of these images and the rather sad daily life of the character, a sort of modern Sisyphus. This dichotomy cast a veil over the real nature of the film and the official poster of the film does not seem to want to resolve this problem.
We can observe this dear Mickey multiplied into 17 versions which take the form of an immense psychedelic tunnel. A poster that can symbolize the satirical purpose of the film, but which does not forget to highlight Robert Pattinson’s goofy smile as an important counterpoint. To this day, it’s still difficult to understand the actual tone of the director’s new film. Parasite.
Still, it will surely not be all joy since Robert Pattinson will notably face that of Mark Ruffalo, described as a “psychopath”. As a reminder, the release of Mickey 17 is scheduled for January 29, 2025 in France.
