Hideo Kojima always shares these movie recommendations and this time the brilliant creator seems to have discovered a film that struck him right in the heart.

Kojima the film critic strikes again

Hideo Kojima has been sharing his numerous film and television recommendations with his community for some time now, particularly on X/Twitter. The father of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding has demonstrated his cinephilia on several occasions in the past and seems to take great pleasure in writing brief reviews of his latest viewings. He recently spoke about the Netflix series The Three-Body Problemor even addressed a magnificent compliment to George Miller, the filmmaker behind the Mad Max universe.. And he strikes again this week with the review of a film that turned him upside down.

A moving film

This week, Hideo Kojima is back with a brief review of a film that visibly upset him: Without ever knowing us Or All of Us Strangers in original version, adaptation of the novel ”Strangers by Taichi Yamada. A particularly moving film, which perfectly illustrates the feeling of solitude according to the creator.

I had work in the afternoon, so I went to see “All of Us Strangers” first thing this morning. Only four people were there, but it was a good film. I felt like I couldn’t come back to reality afterwards. Still, I managed to get to the office while listening to Frankie’s “The Power of Love” on my Walkman. The Japanese screenwriter who influenced me the most is Taichi Yamada. I love his original novel. I also love “The Disembodied” (1988), with a screenplay by Shinichi Ichikawa and directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi. For someone like me who often finds himself alone, facing loneliness and fighting against this feeling is “life” itself. Since the disappearance of my parents and after experiencing the pandemic, this feeling has grown within me. Andrew Haigh’s interpretation and adaptation of loneliness in the latter part of the film is even more powerful than the original! The path of the lonely soul. the way of the lost soul. I cried.

Hideo Kojima was therefore moved to tears by Without ever knowing us, He is not the only one. The film upset many viewers and received mostly positive reviews. On AlloCiné, the press gave it a rating of 3.6/5 and the public gave it 4/5. Abroad, Andrew Haigh’s feature film was unanimously acclaimed: on RottenTomatoes, the film obtained a Tomatometer of 96% and a public score of 91%. Quite a recognition for a film which was nevertheless shunned by the Oscars this year. Beyond its storyline, it seems that it was the performance of Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal that really convinced the audience. If you ever missed this cinema event, know that it is still possible to discover Without ever knowing us in theaters, but for a limited time.
