this X-Men could (again) come back, and it would be a very good idea

Deadpool & Wolverine will mark a proper form of farewell for the saga X-Men from Fox, and a major actress from the films could be there.

The latest trailer for Deadpool 3 has gone all out on the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, as a promise that our good old Logan won’t just be passing through in this third opus. A shock duo to carry a project that has become major for the MCU, and which should include its share of more or less inspired cameos.

A forgotten character from the X-Men saga had already made his return in the first images, and a few new faces were probably added to the ensemble (Azazel, Lady Deathstrike…). That said, aside from Wolverine of course, none of the original X-Men have been officially confirmed to be cast. And an important actress from the first films has clearly not closed the door to a return in Deadpool 3.

The Phoenix cameo

Interpreter of Jean Grey/Phoenix in 5 films of the franchise, including Wolverine battle of the immortal, Famke Janssen spoke about a possible appearance in the MCUat the microphone of ComicBook.com :

“I didn’t know I was going to come back after Jean died in X-Men 2. I came back as Phoenix, I came back for flashback scenes in Wolverine: Battle of the Immortal, and I came back for X-Men: Days of Future Past. I don’t know. I doubt it, but you never know! »

The actress isn’t saying her return is a guarantee, and that makes sense. Even Jennifer Garner, whose appearance as Elektra in Deadpool 3 has been almost confirmed, refuses to confirm it in an interview. But Famke Janssen remains enigmatic enough to leave room for speculation. And, more than other characters, an appearance by Jean Gray for the great resurrection of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would make sense, if only to give emotion to the story.

Not so bad this Phoenix after all

The “good” version of jean gray

Because unlike Sophie Turner’s fairly ordinary performance in the role (in X-Men: ApocalypseeThen Dark Phoenix), Famke Janssen was able to give a real identity to the character, crucial in Logan’s quest for humanity. His death in The Final Showdown is a tipping point for Wolverine, who has become a hermit adrift in The Battle of the Immortal.

Jean came back to life at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past (we don’t really know how, thanks to time travel and the rewriting of history), but she could well be among the mutant graves seen in the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. Which would be a second shock for Logan, precipitating him towards his suicidal inclinations.

Why talk about a return for Famke Janssen in this case?

John could simply appear in a vision of Wolverine, possibly caused by the telepath Cassandra Nova to torment him – he looks very pissed at her in the trailer. But it could also come from the multiverse, perhaps to convince the clawed mutant to join Deadpool’s cause. A way of giving meaning to this variant, but also of somewhat justifying the crossover between the two anti-heroes.

Among the myriad of cameos mentioned, that of Jean Gray is perhaps the one that best meets the specifications. And if Deadpool & Wolverine is intended to be a successful homage to the X-Men films, to do without its iconic Jean Gray would be a shame.

We won’t have to wait much longer to find out, while the film is scheduled for July 24, 2024 in theaters.
